The bundled 8 initiatives are devoted to transforming agriculture so that it provides healthy food, water, material, and medicinal security to communities, and contributes to health of our landscapes & watersheds for improved carbon and water cycling, biodiversity, pollinators and sustenance of life.
Agriculture is a primary driver of land & water degradation globally and contributes significantly to global GHG emissions (>10%). It also contributes food, nutrients, medicine & materials essential to the health of our communities and is considered a matter of national security by the modern nation-state.
Regenerative agriculture recognizes the fragility of “modern” agriculture and argues that resilient communities achieve food, water, material & medicinal security by restoring health to their surroundings and valuing ecosystems function. It generally contemplates a radical transformation to those of us that associate mass monoculture with farming, where multiple and diverse species (wild, livestock and vegetative, and microbiome…) contribute to the resilience of the whole.
The initiatives represented by this bundle are globally relevant and diverse, we work in Kenya, Uganda, Columbia, Croatia, India, Italy and the United States. We’ve disparate aims but a common mission and mandate, i.e. to demonstrate and expand the role of Free Open Source Software in public goods funding.
Gitcoin offers a means for each of us to reclaim agency over the food system that we rely on. Let’s demonstrate the potential of quadratic funding to allocate, prioritize and support transformative changes to our agricultural systems, across scales - help us make history!
